You'll get a lot more people asking for a trade if you make a web page so they can see what doramas you have. It's easy to make a web page and put it up on the Internet, and you don't have to know HTML to make a web page listing your doramas! This page describes two easy methods to do so.
Please also read the companion page describing Making a List of What You Have.
If you have a computer (instead of an internet appliance like Web TV) and can use a text editor, this is the preferred method. Just follow these simple steps:
Copy/paste the code in one of the two following boxes into your favorite text editor. The editor must use pure text (Notepad, Emacs, etc.), rather than an editor that also formats text (Word, Wordpad, etc.). If the paste just shows the text you've copied, you probably are using a pure-text editor. If it does anything additional, such as changing the background color to match the box or showing text in different sizes and styles, it's not a pure-text editor, and you can't use it!
Window's users: Notepad is located in the Start menu under Programs -> Accessories -> Notepad.
Use the code in this box below as your starting point if you only have a few doramas:
YOUR-NAME's Japanese DoramasI have the following doramas for trade and I can make FORMAT-SPECIFICATION. Unless otherwise stated, these shows are all subtitled in English. The videos are graded using Micah's Video Grades.
I'm interested in trading for any doramas I don't have. You can send me e-mail at YOUR-EMAIL-ADDRESS. |
Use the code in this box below as your starting point if you have a lot of doramas and want to organize them into categories. You can replace any of the blocks of code that start with <h3> with whatever category title you want, and you can add or delete blocks using the same style shown below.

Change at minimum anything in all-caps (YOUR-NAME, etc.) to the appropriate value. You can change any of the freeform text (the stuff outside of the <...> code) to whatever you want to say.
The <li> code tells the browser you want to list something. Add additional <li> lines for every dorama you have. If you don't want to have links that describe your shows, use the form of the second <li> line shown above (The <li> line without the <a href=... code).
If you want your shows to have links, the Links page tells you where various databases are that you can use to get show URL's. (A URL is the address of the web page you're looking at. It usually takes the form http://www.NAME.com/... and is shown in the browser's edit box above the page.) Unfortunately, most dorama database sites use frames (i.e., they split the window into two or three smaller windows), and each window frame is a separate URL that is not shown in your browser's address edit box. Probably the easiest way to get the URL for a page in a frame is to put the frame in a new top-level window by itself and then copy the page's address from the edit box. In IE, shift-clicking (rather than just clicking) the mouse over a link puts that link's page in a new top-level window. In Netscape, right-click the mouse in a frame, and select the context menu item Open Frame in New Window.
Note that it's OK to break a line in two as well as add additional spaces anywhere a space would go; the browser usually ignores it. You might, for example, want break up or indent lines for readability if your <li> lines get too long.
Save the file, giving it a .htm or .html suffix. Once saved, you can see what the page will look like in your browser by selecting the File/Open menu item. In the Open dialog, press Browse... in IE or Choose File... in Netscape. When your page is loaded, you can test links and make sure the page looks exactly the way you want it to before you post it.
For example, let's suppose John Doe wants to make a web page of his own shows. He has only a few doramas right now, so he uses the code from the first box. He decides to use links with his shows when he can find them. After he edits the code, he ends up with the following:
John Doe's Japanese DoramasI have the following doramas for trade and I can make stereo VHS copies. Unless otherwise stated, these shows are all subtitled in English. The videos are graded using Micah's Video Grades.
I'm interested in trading for any doramas I don't have. You can send me e-mail at johndoe@foo.com. |
When he loads his web page into the browser, it looks like the following:

If you want to learn HTML to make fancier pages, there are plenty of free tutorials on the web. Just enter HTML tutorial in any search engine, and you'll see a lot of them. For example, I like the HTML School Tutorial.
Once you have the list, you need to find a place to put it on the Internet. Here's how to do it for free on GeoCities.
Note: At some point when you log in or shortly thereafter in the following steps, you may be asked to verify your password. Also, the first time you try to use GeoCities, you will get to a page called Sign up for your Home Page. Pick a topic (Television), and enter the security code. After you submit the form, you will be on a Congratulations page. The URL shortcut is the URL for your dorama list. Click on Build your page now.
That's it! Your list is now available on the Internet for all to see! Once posted, publicize the page's location by filling out a form on the Membership Changes page.
If you forget your web page URL, log back into GeoCities; it will be on most pages after login, usually on the right side of the line that says Welcome, YOUR-ID. Also, whenever you want to add additional doramas, you can do so by logging back in to GeoCities and re-following the steps above.
Don't know what a text editor is? Do you use an internet appliance (like Web TV) instead of a computer? Is your knowledge of computers pretty much nil? Then you should use WebSpawner. Just go to the site, click Create Webpage, and follow the simple step-by-step instructions. It's quick and easy. The body text will appear on your page exactly as you type it. You can change your page just as easily later by clicking Modify Webpage. Once posted, publicize the page's location by filling out a form on the Membership Changes page.
So why shouldn't everyone use WebSpawner?
